John Joseph was the 2nd child of Jacob and Josepha Metz. John Joseph was born 5/17/1841.
In 1860 John was working in New Orleans until the Civil War broke out, when he returned home to enlist in
the army. He was 21 years of age when he enlisted on Sept. 19,1862 in Capt. Simmons lst Ky. Independent Battery. He took active part in engagements of Lewisburg, Cloyd Mountain, New River Bridge, Lynchburg, Summerville, and Cedar Creek. He was captured in the battle of Antietam, Cloyd Mountain, and Lynchburg, but was able to escape each tine. In 1864 he was granted a ten days leave of absence and returned to his command
at New River. He was granted his honorable discharge at Louisville, Ky., July 10, 1865.
Corp. John J. Metz married Mary Ann Gries 6/10/1867. The witnesses to their wedding were Christine Metz and John
Weiler at St. Bonaventure Church. John and Mary Ann had 11 children.
Mary Ann died in 1891.
The second marriage of Corp. John J. Metz was to Lena Kraus, on Jan. 9,1895, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She had a son Charles, by a previous marriage,
she was a native of Germany, born Aug. 11,1863, in Wurtemberg. She was the daughter of Martin and Barbara (Steifel) Sidenspinner. Her father
served as sharpshooter in the German revolution in I848.
Corp. John J. Metz was a butcher by trade and lived at 1986 Queen City Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mary Ann died in 1891. John Joseph died in 1899. They are buried in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Bridgetown, OH.
