Simon was named after his grandfather, Simon Trefzger. He attended St. Joseph's Grade School in the 1890's. German nuns there couldn't (or wouldn't)
prounounce the French name of Gravois (Grav-Wa) and it became pronounced Grav-eye. This became spelled as Grawey and all the Grawey
siblings were taught the same. The name ultimately got pronounced Grau-ee and everyone spelled it Grawey .It is not believ ed that the
name was ever legally changed, but that it just got used that way. Thus, we are related for sure to anyone with the last name of Grawey.
He went to grade school with person who later became pastor of St. Mark's parish in Peoria, Father FitzGerald, who also married Howard and
Maryann Mooney and Mike and Vicki Mooney.
He was married at St. Boniface Catholic Church. They drove to church in horse and buggy. Attendants at wedding were Clementine Grawey and Chick
Barth. His nickname was Si. He was very quiet. He started Grawey Glass Company during the Depression. He worked in his brother's bowling
alley at night setting pins and during the day at his glass shop. His son's, Henry and Bob, also helped there during the day and eventually
owned and ran the glass shop.
Martha Grawey Groeper compiled most of the information about the Graweys in this family tree. Her last
address as of 2003 was 901 W. Westwood Drive, Peoria, IL 61614
