Wine in Cincinnati

Hayna, the ancestral home of the Metz family is in a wine producing area of Germany. One of the main crops raised on the Farm was grapes. The family grew grapes, made and sold wine, as well as growing other crops and raising livestock.

"Wine growing in Cincinnati:
In 1849 the number of acres within a radius of 20 miles from Cincinnati dedicated to wine growing was 743 acres. These were built by 264 German owners and tenants.
The average yield in the good year of 1848 was 300 gallons per acre.
In 1849, the worst year, the yield was 100 gallons (per acre).
One two-acre vineyard of Johann Wenz produced 1300 gallons."
