In June 1985, Berger Hill celebrated its 12Oth Anniversary. Berger Hill is the second
oldest property owned by the same family in Cincinnati. We were told that the
Longworth property in the eastern side of Cincinnati is the oldest property in the same
family.
In July, 1985 Jack Fogerty from WCPO did a short documentary.
On Video Tape:
"The Berger house was built by a man named Maline in 1835. In 1865 there was a fire
and John Berger rebuilt it, restoring it to 4 rooms, where he raised eight children and later
built on an addition. John died in 1894.
One day John Eckerle saw some of the grandchildren enjoying the rain water from the
barn roof accumulated in the half wine barrel.
It was in 1910 that John Eckerle decided the children should have a pool. The pool on
Berger Hill is believed to be the oldest private pool in the city still in use.
John Berger and Mary Metz were married in Feb.1865. They lived on Richmond Street in
downtown Cincinnati. Mary was continully ill, so John bought 8 1/2 acres out in the
country (2567 Queen City Ave.), near Mary's family home where they could have cows,
horses, dogs, cats, chickens, peacocks, and a run for a pet deer."
