Bertha Edith Heinzman Trefzger
1905 - 1999

Bertha married Herb Trefzger on December 27, 1924. Herb had just taken a foreman's job for the Richardson Company in their Chicago plant. So Mom moved to the Chicago area. They had an apartment in a large apartment building at 116 S. Maple Ave., Oak Park, IL. Before I was born in June 1926 they had purchased a small home in Maywood, IL. It was at 1802 S. Seventh Ave.

Mom and Pop moved back to Cincinnati in March 1927. I think both Mom and Pop were a little homesick. They both wanted to be back in Cincinnati with their families. But most of all I think that Pop did not like working for a big firm. He wanted to be his own boss. He wanted to study interior decorating and to have his own business.

After the family arrived back in Cincinnati we lived with Mom's mother and father rent free on Burnet Avenue. Dad immediately started night school studying Interior Decorating at the University of Cincinnati. In 1929 the depression hit. After Grandpa Harry lost his job we moved to Grandpa and Grandma Trefzger's at 3450 Cheviot Avenue rent free. January 30,1932 Jim was born. During the summer of 1932 Dad, Aunt Elsa, Wally Sheblessy and Aunt Adele Berger all graduatied from U.C.

In 1934 Grospapa (Fred) Trefzger lost his job with Boehnlein Poultry Company. Our stay with Grandpa and Grandma Trefzger just didn't work out.

Grandpa and Nannie Heinzman offered us their 3rd floor. Pop and Mom put a small bathroom and a small kitchen in the 3rd floor of 2230 Burnet Avenue in Mount Auburn and we moved in, again rent free.

Withe no air conditioning in the 1930s we spent many evenings haveing picnic suppers on Berger Hill.

When I was at Holy Name school Mom got involved with the PTA, then the Parents Club at Roger Bacon. After Mom and Dad moved to Westwood and Jim was at St. Catharine's Mom got involved with the PTA there, then Elder. Mom was continuely involved with Parish and Archdiocesan a groups and activities.

Mom and Dad both liked to travel. They traveled quite a bit while Dad was working. After he retired they traveled even more.

Mom was a good historian. She kept extensive notes. Read about her life history in "Bertha's story" and all her activities in "Betha's notes".

Bertha died on 12/19/1999 in St. Francis Hospital, Westwood. She is buried in the Heinzman Plot, Spring Grove Cemetary, Cincinnati, OH.
