Joseph was the 6th child and the 3rd son born in Wehr, Baden to Johann Trefzger and Theresia Staubhar. Joseph had an older brother Ludwig who died when less that 2 months old. Joseph, when he was 21 years old immigrated to Dayton, Ohio in 1881 just about a year after his brother John had immigrated. Joseph lived with his brother in Dayton.
We assume that when his brother John moved to southern California Joseph moved to the greater Cincinnati area. The 1910 census list Joseph married to Margaret living in Madisonville with sons Joseph Jr. 17years old and Edwin 15 years old.
Many of Joseph Jr.’s descendants still live in eastern greater Cincinnati. Edwin William moved to Herkimer, NY in 1936 or 1937. Most of his descendants live in New York.
Census information:
In the 1910 census Joseph, Margaret, Joseph (Jr.) 17 and Edwin (15) live in Columbia in Hamilton County, OH.
In 1920 Joseph(Jr.) and wife Mary live in Cincinnati Ward 2. Son Robert Wm is 2 years old.
Also in 1920 Edwin 24, wife Agusta 22, and mother Margaret 68, live in Cincinnati.
In 1930 Josepj(Jr.), wife Mary, Robert 12. Stewart 9, and William 6 live in Cincinnati.
Also in 1930 Edwin, wife Agusta, Anita 8, Mary 3, and Edna 1 live in Cincinnati.
Study of Joseph’s family
Stewart Trefzger, of Cincinnati, had done some research on his grandfather Joseph Philip Trefzger. He found that Joseph P. arrived 6/16/1881 in New York from LaHarve. Joseph P. lived in Dayton with a John Trefzger who had arrived 4/1/1880 from Baden. Stewart also found that Joseph applied for his first papers on 2/13/1882, and he became a citizen in 1885 at the age of 28.
A birth record for a Joseph Trefzger, and a birth record for a Johann Trefzger both with the same parents was found in the microfilmed records from the Catholic Church in Wehr, Baden. Then a Family Book Church record for Joseph and Johan’s family was found. It contained the note behind each of their names that they went to America.
Thanks
The first and most of my info came from Stewart W. Trefzger in Cincinnati, OH and his cousin Edwin W. Trefzger in New York. Thanks men. Additional information has come from Edwin’s son Ed and Stewart’s granddaughter Tracy. I have also spoken to Louri Trefzger, Barbara Trefzger, and Kasee Trefzger all from here in Cincinnati.
