Origen and early records

The first record of the Harter family is from 1371 when Wessel thor Hardt sold a bull to the knight “Bitter von Raesfeldt”.

The Harters originally came from Raesfeld, Germany, a small village to the southwest of Muenster, near the Dutch border.

Raesfeld was ruled for centuries by the Count of Raesfeld and Velen. The old Harter farm belonged to the Count.
The Harters had to work for him and pay homage to him for over 600 years.

Our Hater family can be documented back to Jan Gerdt Harter (Haartr, Terhaart, etc.) born about 1680. He lived on the old Harter farm and was married to Catharina Busch.
