Edward's parents were Josef and Anna Raiker Trefzger. They had 2 sons; Joseph born 1844 and Edward born 1847.

Edward was born in Switzerland in April, 1847. The 1900 censuus said he immigrated in 1848. His death certificate also states that he immigrated in 1848.

Edward's parents must have brought the two boys to the States in 1848. We have found no records of the parents in the U.S.A. We do not know if they stayed or went back to Switzerland.

On November 9,1868 Edward petitioned for Naturalization in New York City.

On July 12,1871 Edward married Ima Catherine Schievembusch in New York, NY. They had the 5 children, 3 lived to be adults: Caroline in 1875, Joseph Edward in 1877 and Mary in 1882.

The 1880 census lists Edward 33, Catherine 28, Croline 5, and Edward 3. He was a cigar maker.

In 1890 Edward married Catherine Fredericka Schleich (the sister of Elizabeth Schleich who had married Edward's brother Joseph). Catherine Fredericka had been married to John F. Landseadel in 1867 and they had 5 children: John,Jr., Louis, William, Mary & Charles. John,Sr. married Bertha Lyons in 1883.

In the 1891/92 NYC directory Edward was a painter, living at 230 E. 56th St., New York, NY.

In the 1900 census Edward Trefzger lives at 1058 Jackson Ave., New York, NY. He was born Apr/1847 in Switzerland, married 10 yrs., immigrated in 1848, occupation was making paint. He couldn't read English. He did speak and write English. He ownes a house with a mortgage. He was married to Fredrika, who was born Oct/1848 in Germany. She had 5 children, 4 living. Her son Charles, born Jul/1879 in New York, NY., a shipping clerk was living with them..

Edward died February 28,1903 in the Bronx, new York, NY. at the age of 53. He is buried in All Faiths Cemetery.

Schleich
Frederic Schleich, Elizabeth's father, was born in Baden-Baden in 1818. In 1854 he brought his family to New York, NY. Elizabeth was 1 year old and Catherine Fredericka was 6 years old.

Note:
Bismark's war against Austria was in 1866.

Comment:
We do believe that Edward immigrated in 1848 when he was 1 years old with parents and brother. If the family returned to Switzerland Edward and Joseph could have returned to the States to escape being drafted by Bismark.
We have not been able to find a relationship with other Trefzger families.
We have not found any living descendants.

Thanks:
Our sincere thanks to:
Meg Landseadel Staton who has given us information about the Schleichs, that Joseph and Edward were brothers, for death certificates and for cemetery records.
